In Tim’s shoes is a little experiment I’m doing for one week, focusing on my experiences rather than my opinions.
Today’s the day when I’m supposed to reveal who the author of the ominous “The owners of capital…” quote is. Unfortunately I can’t. An e-mail that has jumped from inbox to inbox over the last few days claims the quote is from Karl Marx. And I’m sure Karl Marx would wish he had wrote it if he saw the situation we’re in now. But a journalist over at the Atlantic with an eye for detail exposed it as a fraud. The International Herald Times confirms it.
When I saw the quote a couple of days ago, I posted it on Go Too Far East without naming the author. I wanted to see if knowing the author was Karl Marx would influence at all people’s reaction to the statement. Now I’m really glad that I didn’t name the author since it was fraud.
A fake. In a way that’s even more surprising, huh? Who goes around inventing fraudulent quotes by dead economists and passing them around as fact? Unfortunately, most people who saw the first e-mail will probably never find out the end of the story. That’s history for you.
This morning I took a shower in my shower sandals. The bathroom in our apartment has no wall between the sink area, toilet area and shower area. I like to compare it to a prison cell. Needless to say, you have to wear shower sandals not only when you’re taking a shower, but whenever you enter the bathroom. I hate switching back and forth, shoes, sandals, shower sandals. What the heel!
They’re also my beach sandals though. They were given to me by my Indonesian buddy Agus — he brought them all the way from Indonesia. The quality is awesome because Indonesian people wear sandals all the time. Whenever I’m at the beach wearing my authentic Indonesian sandals, I know I’ve got the real thing on my feet. And they have a cool fish design on them too.
